Abstract/Contents:"Athletic fields and golf course greens are often constructed of calcareous sands. While the medium is high in calcium (Ca⁺⁺) carbonate, it is not unusual for Ca⁺⁺ ions to comprise less that 60% of the cations on the cation exchange cites of the media. Soil tests based on the Basic Cation Saturation Ratio theory of soil testing call for supplemental applications of calcium to these areas. The objective of this study was to determine if these additional calcium applications to turf grown on a calcareous media are necessary. The greenhouse study was conducted on both Kentucky bluegrass and creeping bentgrass grown on either calcareous or silica sand media. Treatements included a control, gypsum, lime, calcium, nitrate, and calcium chelate incorporated into the media at 22.4 g Ca⁺⁺ m⁻². There were no significant increases in tissue Ca⁺⁺ content in response to treatments for either species for grass grown on the calcareous sand. On the silica sand, all treatments increased tissue Ca⁺⁺ content for both species. Field trials on calcareous sands were established in the spring of 1999 to further evaluate plant response."
