Abstract/Contents:Profiles an experiment designed to evaluate the efficiency of winter protection covers against winter damage to Poa annua greens, to determine the thermic profile under the different winter protection covers, and to visually evaluate the greens following the removal of the covers. Covers evaluated include a permeable plastic Evergreen cover; an impermeable plastic Evergreen cover; a curled wood mat protected with an impermeable plastic Evergreen cover; a 10cm air pocket under an impermeable plastic Evergreen cover; a permeable Evergreen cover covered with 15cm of straw and an impermeable Evergreen cover on top; a thick felt material covered by an impermeable, opaque polyethylene cover ("Golftex pro"); a thin felt material covered by an impermeable, opaque polyethylene cover (Soltex pro); and a control treatment without protection. The experiment was conducted in Montreal and Quebec. The Quebec experiment saw a considerable snow cover protecting the turfgrass underneath the winter covers, while the Montreal experiment saw little snow. This led to the winter covers being the influencing factor in determining winter damage. The control without treatment, the permeable and impermeable Evergreen covers and the thin felt material cover were not sufficient protection for the Poa annua.
