| Abstract/Contents: | "The identification of annual bluegrass (Poa annua var. reptans) ecotypes harboring superior tolerance to subfreezing temperature will be key to the development of greens-type adapted to harsh winter conditions. Our objective was to assess cold tolerance amongst 46 annual bluegrass ecotypes originating from various regions in North America (QC, NY, PA, NJ, MD, VA, NE, CO, WA, and OR). Plants were cold acclimated to natural winter conditions in an unheated greenhouse during winter 1998-99. Freezing tolerance was expressed as the lethal temperature for 50% of the plants (LT(@50)). Determinations of LT(@50) in February and March 1999 revealed variability for freezing tolerance ranging from <-26 to -18°C amongst annual bluegrass ecotypes." |
