Abstract/Contents:"Seedlings of three slow-developing grass species - crested wheatgrass (Agropyron desertorum (Fisch.) Schult.), Russian wild ryegrass (Elymus junceus Fisch.), and Altai wild ryegrass (Elymus angustus Trin.) - and of two rapid-developing species - pubescent wheatgrass (Agropyron trichophorum (Link.) Richt.) and slender wheatgrass (Agropyron trachycaulum (Link.) Malte.) - were grown in monocultures or in mixed cultures in the greenhouse and evaluated at 30 days. Areas of lamina and sheath and weight of sheath were greatly affected by competitive stress. Crested wheatgrass and Russian and Altai wild ryegrasses performed better when grown with slender wheatgrass than when grown with pubescent wheatgrass. It is suggested that slender wheatgrass should be grown in mixture with each of the three grasses to determine if similar relationships would occur under field conditions."
