Abstract/Contents:"In the urban western US, approximately 50% of water used during the growing season is applied to landscapes. The predominate user of water in the West, however, continues to be agriculture - which may account for as much as 85-90% of total water use in some states. As urban populations continue to grow in the West a dilemma is created with regard to existing water supplies. Groundwater is being depleted more rapidly than it can be recharged. Because much of the western climate is arid, there is a large dependence upon mountain snowmelt that is stored in lakes and reservoirs. Resistance towards the creation of more storage (i.e., dam construction) has encouraged urban entities to purchase agricultural water and reallocate it to urban uses. The intense competition for water resources has far-reaching implications for the future of the Western turfgrass industry."
