Abstract/Contents: | "This experiment was conducted on a golf course fairway in Bedford County to assess the performance of bifenthrin and dursban formulations against a natural adult ABW population. The fairway consisted primarily of annual bluegrass (70%) and Kentucky bluegrass (30%). Applications were made when flowering dogwood was in full bloom. Treatment plots were 5 x 6 ft, arranged in a RCB design and replicated four times. Granular formulations were applied with a hand-held shaker with top dressing sand added to provide optimum product distribution. At treatment time (28 Apr), the following soil and environmental conditions existed: air temperature, 51°F; soil temperature at 1 inch depth, 56°F; soil temperature at 2 inch depth, 54°F; RH, 64%; amount of thatch, 0.1875-0.25 inch; soil textural class, silt loam; soil particle analysis: 26.4% sand, 52.7% silt, 20.9% clay, percent water content (percent by wt), 27.9%; percent organic matter, 7.8; soil pH, 5.9; water pH, 7; application time, mid-morning; and clear skies. The experimental area was irrigated in with 0.11 inch water immediately after treatment. Post-treatment counts were made on 2 Jun. ABW control was evaluated by removing two 4-inch cup cutter sod samples from each replicate and recording the total number of ABW life stages (larva, pupa, adult) per sample. Totals were then converted to a ft² count. ABW adults were actively observed on golf course fairways, greens, and roughs before treatment. All treatments provided significant control with SPG98-002 and SPG98-003 providing outstanding control. No phytotoxicity was noted." |
