| Abstract/Contents: | The feeding habits of Melanoplus bivittatus (Say) and M. femurrubrum (Deg.) in grassland in Ontario were investigated in 1971 and 1972 by analysing the crop contents. The study indicated that both species are mixed feeders that prefer non-graminaceous plants to grasses. Both species ingested a wide range of food-plants in the field. M. bivittatus showed preferences for chicory and, to a less extent, red clover (Trifolium pratense) and dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), and M. femurrubrum for Lotus corniculatus, timothy grass (Phleum pratense) and dandelion. Differential growth and mortality resulted when the nymphs were reared on different food-plants. |
