Abstract/Contents: | "This study was completed to determine the speed of kill of JB grubs on a golf course rough in Lewistown which has a natural population of JB grubs. The turfgrass area consisted primarily of Kentucky bluegrass (50%) and annual bluegrass (50%). Treatment plots were 9 x 6 ft, arranged in a RCB design and replicated three times. Liquid formulations were applied by using a CO₂ sprayer with 4 8002VS TeeJet nozzles mounted on a 6 ft boom, operating at 28 psi, and applied in 817 ml of water/54 ft² or delivering 4.0 gal/1000 ft². Granular formulations were applied with a hand-held shaker and mixed with fine top dressing sand to facilitate product distribution. At treatment time (9 Sep), the following soil and environmental conditions existed: air temperature, 63°F; soil temperature at 1-inch depth, 68°F; soil temperature at 2-inch depth, 68°F; RH, 63%; amount of thatch, 0.125-0.25 inch; soil textural class, sandy loam; soil particle size analysis: sand, 61.3%; silt, 30.8%; clay, 7.9%; organic matter, 4.0%: soil water content (percent by wt), 22.8; water pH, 7.0; soil pH, 5.3; application time, late-morning; and skies partly cloudy. Immediately after treatments, the plots were irrigated in with 0.2 inch of water. Post-treatment irrigation and rain occurred as follows: 11 Sep, ca. 0.25 inch; 13 Sept, ca. 0.25 inch; and 22 Sep, ca. 0.5 inch. Post-treatment counts were made on 14 Sep, 23 Sep, and 7 Oct. Three sod samples, 1 ft² each, were randomly taken from each replicate on sampling dates 14 and 23 Sep while two sod samples were randomly taken from each replicate on 7 Oct. The total number of living and dead JB grubs/ft² was recorded. An average of 5.0/ft² third instar JB grubs were recorded in the experimental area prior to treatment on 9 Sep. Merit provided significant mortality of JB grubs 5 DAT. JB grub populations started to collapse on 23 Sep (14 DAT). No phytotoxicity was noted." |
