| Abstract/Contents: | "The seed set of apomitic reproducing Texas bluegrass X Kentucky bluegrass hybrids can be increased by supplying a source of pollen and this pollen can be furnished by either parent. There was no advantage in supplying a mixture of pollen from the two parents; in fact there was a slight decrease in seed set when a mixture was used. There are genetic differences in effectiveness of plants to furnish pollen for increased seed set of the hybrids. One Texas bluegrass plant 10-25 has been identified as a good pollinator. The seed set of TXKY 90-13-8 and TXKY 93-79-15 was increased by the application of Texas bluegrass pollen pollen whereas TXKY 90-16-1 was not or only slightly increased. Additional studies wil be conduced to determine if time of anthesis can explain the differences in response of the hybrids to pollination by Texas bluegrass." |
