Abstract/Contents:Timothy seed was collected from natural populations in Hokkaido and grown at Sapporo in experimental fields. 4 yr after sowing growth of tillers was studied for each population. Max. growth rate and intrinsic growth rate were larger in S. Hokkaido ecotypes than in northern ecotypes and southern ecotypes reached the max. growth rate earlier. Growth rate was higher in southern ecotypes during the 1st period of growth but higher in the northern ecotypes in later growth. From 12 to 19 May, leaf wt. increased in southern but not northern ecotypes. It was concluded that differences in seasonal growth were due to a time lag in development resulting from the time of commencement of leaf growth under low temp. in spring.
