Abstract/Contents:Discusses the popularity of soccer in Russia and the development of stadia after the fall of the Soviet Union. Explains that initially, "astronomic prices, unemployment, lack of social rights and guarantees led to a loss of interest in public entertainment, the fight for survival being the most important issue for millions of people." As the financial climate changed "the crowds returned to stadium stands. As a result, the sports clubs were encouraged to undertake stadium constrction and rebuilding programmes." Explains that "financing stadium developments in most cases involves the club's own resources as well as bank loans and clubs put their stadiums as security on the loans." Also discusses stadium issues specific to Moscow, which include soccer matches sometimes played in the snow.
