Abstract/Contents:The study objectives are: 1) Identify algae and cyanobacteria species from lakes and greens; 2) Use similarity indices to determine how similar lake populations are to greens populations, and 3) Use seeds to determine if algae and/or cyanobacteria are allelopathic to turfgrass. Similarity indices from algae and cyanobacteria counts, percent turfgrass cover, algal scores and turfgrass quality have been recorded monthly over a one year period on golf course greens. The courses involved in this study include: Starkville Country Club, Mississippi State University Golf Course, Green Oaks Country Club, and Columbus Country Club. Those alga and cyanobacterium most common on these greens will be used in the second phase of the study. Three tables include algae and cyanobacteria species and means. Four graphs show monthly alga and cyanobacteria counts on the golf course greens. It appears that cyanobacteria and algae compete on greens, thus allelopathy may be present. Cyanobacteria populations in general were high in winter months, while algae varied with location. Although similarity indices have not been completed, species for both algae and cyanobacteria appear different for each location. Included is an outline of phase two to determine allelopathy of Agrostis palustrus seed through inoculations and germination percentages.
