Abstract/Contents:"The effects of a combined metalaxyl, thiabendazole and thiram seed coating (Fortiva) on the establishment of four grass species (Agrostis tenuis Sibth., Poa pratensis L., Festuca rubra L. and Lolium perenne L.) and two seed mixtures (M1 80% L. perenne to 20% F. rubra and M2 80% F. rubra to 20% A. tenuis) was investigated during the autumn, winter and spring of 1995/96. In this trial, treatment with Fortiva had significant and overall positive overall effects on the establishment of the different grass species and mixtures. Averaged across species and mixtures the relative establishment of Fortiva treated grasses was some 20% greater than that of the untreated grasses at the end of the study in April 1996. Analysis of the different species and mixtures with and without Fortiva showed that Fortiva markedly promoted the establishment of P. pratensis (70%), A. tenuis (50%) and the Agrostis/Festuca mixture M2 (20%). Comparison of the different species and mixtures independently of the effects of Fortiva demonstrated that L. perenne and the mixture containing L. perenne established more rapidly than the other species and mixture M2. Seedling diseases were noted on the untreated plots of A. tenuis in mid-November 1995, these spread to the other grass species and mixture, excluding F. rubra, during the remainder of November and December. Treatment with Fortiva had a dramatic affect on the severity of the seedling diseases on the A. tenuis, the P. pratensis and mixture M2. The disease scores for untreated plots of these grasses was at least 5 times greater than those of Fortiva treated plots in late November, December and early January. Actual live ground cover, shoot density and depth of rooting were assessed in mid April 1996. Overall, treatment with Fortiva increased ground cover and shoot density but did not significantly affect the depth of rooting. Like the measurements of relative establishment, live ground cover and shoot density was promoted most for the P. pratensis, the A. tenuis and mixture M2. Live ground cover and shoot density of the two different grasses in mixtures M1 and M2 were assessed separately. Analyses of these results showed that Fortiva did not significantly affect the live cover or shoot density of L. perenne or F. rubra in mixture M1. However, Fortiva did significantly increase the live ground cover of both F. rubra and A. tenuis in mixture M2. It also significantly increased the numbers of Agrostis shoots per unit area in this mixture."
