Abstract/Contents:The photosynthetic and respiratory rates of attached leaves of 14 temperate and 27 tropical grass spp. were measured at 20 plus or minus 0.5 deg C and 35 plus or minus 0.5 deg , and 45 and 65 klx light, resp., in May 1975 and June-July 1976. Generally, tropical grasses showed twice as much CO2 assimilation as temperate grasses. Dallis grass cv. Elandstop, green panic, Rhodes grass cv. Katambora, Bahia grass, grain sorghum, Panicum coloratum var. makarikariense and Paspalum urvillei showed the highest photosynthetic rates of 50-55 mg CO2/dm2 h, but those of kikuyu grass, weeping lovegrass, Axonopus affinis and Stenotaphrum secundatum were 27-31 mg CO2/dm2 h, which were similar to smooth brome and tall fescue. A negative correlation between photosynthetic rate and specific leaf area was observed in temperate but not tropical grasses. It was concluded that specific differences in photosynthetic activity were associated with the taxonomic and evolutionary groups of each grass sp.
