Abstract/Contents:"Zinc sulfide was tested as a source of agricultural Zn in the laboratory, greenhouse, and field. Zinc sulfate and ZnO were used for comparison. The test plants were pangolagrass (Digitaria decumbens Stent) in the greenhouse and whiteclover (Trifolium repens L) - bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) sod in the field. A double acid (0.05 N HCl and 0.025N H2SO4) extractant removed about 80% of the added ZnSO4 and ZnO, but less than 15% of ZnS was extracted from ZnS-treated soil was always slightly higher than the check and became significant with time, indicating a gradual release of Zn from this source. Retention was postulated to be a result of both chemical and biological processes. Zinc uptake by the plants was greatest from ZnSO4 followed in turn by ZnO and ZnS. The differences between ZnO and ZnSO4. When Zn was applied on a pH 6.0 soil surface in the field, plant uptake from ZnO and ZnS was similar; while the Zn taken up from ZnSO4 was greater. These differences decreased with time. Liming the soil or applying Zn sources on the surface of the soil as against mixing, decreased the relative Zn uptake."
