Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the reasons for thatch buildup, including the species of turfgrass, excessive nitrogen, soil texture, drainage, soil pH, pesticide effects, and turf clippings. Discusses the adverse affects of thatch on turfgrass, including excessive water holding, ineffective fertilizer and pesticide application, restricted air penetration, its role in harboring insects, lifting of turfgrass crown, chlorosis development, turf sponginess, and raised soil acidity. Also discusses some of the benefical effects of a controlled layer of thatch, including insulation, cushioning effect, mulching, and reduced compaction. Details ways to control thatch, including prevention methods, biological control, and mechanical control through removal. |
