| Abstract/Contents: | Describes trials to determine the performance of 84 cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass under conditions similar to those of irrigated home lawns (high maintenance) and conditions similar to parks and school yards (low maintenance). Three separate trials were conducted at Iowa State University. One is a high-maintenance study established in 1981 that received 4 lb nitrogen (N)/1000 ft2/yr and is irrigated as needed; another is a low-maintenance study established in 1980 that receives 1 lb N/1000 ft2/yr in September and is not irrigated. The third trial was established in 1985 and received 4 lb N/1000 ft2 but is not irrigated. RAM-1, Glade, Kimono, Adelphi, Cheri, WW Ag 478, and Midnight were the best of the cultivars in the high-maintenance trial. Most of these cultivars have consistently performed well over the past years and can be considered among the best cultivars for Iowa conditions on high maintenance sites. Most of the cultivars performed satisfactorily because of the very mild weather conditions in 1986. K3-162, PSU-173, WW Ag 463, Plush, SH-2, and Cheri were the top rated cultivars in the low maintenance trial. Many cultivars that ranked in the upper 25 positions in 1986 have been ranked much lower in drier years. In choosing cultivars for low maintenance conditions, data from several years should be considered. |
