Abstract/Contents: | "Curly mesquitegrass (Hilaria belangeri (Stued.) Nash) is a palatable nutritious rangegrass in the southwestern United States. Early research assumed no after-ripening existed in caryopses of this species indicating that all seed could germinate immediately. Germination trials were conducted in six week intervals for 36 weeks on caryopses cleaned either at harvest or just prior to each trial. Average increases in germination from 59 to 92% and 55 to 87% demonstrated an after-ripening period of 6 to 12 weeks after harvest in caryopses from two populations of culy mesquitegrass. Maximum germinations of 94% to 90% occurred after 12 weeks in storage for caryopses cleaned at harvest and cleaned prior to each trial, respectively. Caryopses not separated from fascicles at harvest displayed a rapid decline in total germination percentage after 24 weeks of storage even though fascicles were removed just prior to germination trials. These results led us to suggest that seed storage periods and conditions should be taken into consideration when attempting to establish curly mesquitegrass by seeding. |
