Abstract/Contents:"A greenhouse bioassay was conducted to investigate the differential mortality response to two species of mole crickets to two insecticides. Medium size nymphs of TMC and SMT were used. The nymphs were collected from golf course fairways using the soapy water flush and reared in the laboratory for ten days prior to starting the test. CRD was used and each treatment was replicated four times. Five gal plastic buckets were used and each bucket was filled with 4 inches of sandy soil taken from the Fox Squirrel Golf Course in Brunswick County, NC. Five mole cricket nymphs were put into each bucket (regarded as a replicate) one day before insecticide treatment. Insecticiedes were applied to TMC treatments on 31 Aug, and SMC treatments on 21 Sep using a COā‚‚ hand-held sprayer delivering 0.1 fl oz (3 ml) of solution per bucket (equivalent to 58 gal/acre) with a MeterJetĀ® spray gun (No. 23623-31-1/4F) with a full cone nozzle (C-35). Mortality was determined by pouring the sandy soil out of each bucket to count the number of dead/live crickets. Unrecovered mole crickets were regarded as dead. Soil and live mole crickets were returned to the buckets for continued observation. All data were transformed (square root of X + 0.5) prior to ANOVA and Waller-Duncan K-ratio T-test. DeltaGardĀ® SC and DeltaGardĀ® showed significantly better control of SMC than TMC at 7 DAT. More than 80% SMC in the DeltaGard G treatment came to the surface and died within several hours after insecticide application. The mortality of SMC from DeltaGardĀ® at 7 DAT was significantly higher than that of TMC at 14 DAT. Talstar provided significantly better control of TMC than SMC at 14 DAT."
