Abstract/Contents: | "This test was conducted on mature low-maintenance Kentucky bluegrass turf at the University of Kentucky Spindletop Farm, near Lexington. The turf was on a Maury silt loam soil (pH = 6.2) with neglible thatch. Plots (5 x 6ft) were arranged in a RCB design with four replicates. All plots were inoculated twice with field collected adult JB (≅ 150 per) on 10 Jul and then again 2 wk later. Beetles were enclosed in an 8-inch PVC cylinder driven into the ground approximately 2 inches and covered with pieces of window screen. Insecticide treatments were applied on 17 Jun for preventive treatments and on 21 Aug for curative treatments. Granular treatments were pre-weighed, mixed with dry sand and applied by gloved hand. Liquid applications were made using a CO₂ sprayer equiped with four Spraying System 8004 Tee-Jet nozzles that delivered 2109g pressure per cm². Conditions during application were 82 and 89°F respectively with winds 5 mph or less. After both applications, all plots were irrigated with approximately 0.5 inch of water. After the preventive application, the plots received additional water on 19 Jun when 0.24 inch of rain fell. After the curative applications, no significant rain fell before harvesting the plots. The Plots [plots] were watered periodically to maintain the turf between applications and after the curative application due to lack of rainfall. Plots were sampled on 15 Sep by cutting a 2 x 1.5 ft strip, about 3 inches deep with a motorized sod cutter. Sample strips were taken adjacent to the center to avoid the inoculation area. Sod strips were rolled back and examined for grubs. All grubs were collected and taken back to the lab for identification. At the time of sampling, total grub densities in the checks averaged 36.5 per sample (12.2 per ft² ). All treatments significantly reduced grub densities relative to untreated checks. Control of MC and total grubs was not significantly different for timing of application or between formulations of MERIDIAN. Also, control of MC and total grubs with both formulations of MERIDIAN was not different from the standards. Diazinon, Merit, or Mach-2. For JB, all curative applications of MERIDIAN are as effective as similar rates applied preventively. There was no evidence of phytotoxicity from any treatment." |
