Abstract/Contents:"This study was conducted to evaluate new insecticides for preventive control of BB compared with early curative control. The test was located on a lawn at the southwest corner of the Agricultural and Technical Institute (ATI) building of OSU, Wooster, OH. Treatments were applied 7 May (preventive) and 11 Jun (early curative) to plots 10 ft x 10 ft arranged with replicates separated by 3 ft, in a RCB design replicated four times. Liquid treatments were applied using a CO₂ pressurized sprayer with TeeJet 8010 nozzles at 20 psi calibrated to deliver 3.0 gal/1000 ft². No posttreatment irrigation was applied. Field conditions at time of 7 May applications were as follows: turf-60% Kentucky bluegrass, 20% perennial ryegrass, 20% clover/Poa trivialis/P.annua, mowed at 2.5 inches; no thatch; soil - slightly dry; slope to east; 60°F at 1 inch, 58°F at 3 inches (soil sample yielded: pH = 5.3; P-K-Ca-Mg = 76, 426, 2252, 350 lb/acre available nutrient, respectively; cation exchange capacity = 9.7; organic matter = 7.3%; sand-silt-clay = 26%, 51%, 23%, respectively = silt loam); weather - air temp 68°F; partly cloudy; 0-8 mph wind from northeast; pests - generally infested in 1998 and adult BB found in plot. Field conditions at time of 11 Jun applications were as follows: turf - same; soil - slightly dry; 78°F at 1 inch; 75°F at 3 inches; weather - air temp 85°F; clear; 0-5 mph from south; pests - small BB larvae in stems. Efficacy data were obtained 30 Jun (19 DAT) by counting the number of live BB larvae, pupae and callow adults in each of five 4.25-inch turf/soil cores taken from each plot in a biased manner (the cores were removed from spots where billbug frass was disclosed in stems). ANOVA was performed on untransformed totals per plot and means separated by LSD at α = 0.05. All the treatments provided significant control though the DeltaGard control was considered poor. Untreated checks had 17.3 billbug larvae/pupae per ft², which is considered a moderate infestation. Damage was difficult to rate because of the poor, droughty condition of the lawn. No phytotoxicity was observed after any of the treatments."
