Abstract/Contents:"Various insecticides and insecticide combinations were applied on 27 Apr (when ant mounds first appear) to determine rapidity and length of ant mound suppression over an entire season. The test was located on fairway #11 of Crockett's Green Hills Golf Course, Clyde, OH. Treatments were applied to 10 x 15 ft plots arranged in a RCB design replicated four times. There were 3-ft alleys around all plots. Liquid applications were made using a CO₂ pressurized sprayer with TeeJet 8010 nozzles at 20 psi calibrated to deliver 1.5 gal/1000 ft². Granular treatments were applied with a shaker jar. No post-treatment irrigation was applied. Field conditions at the time of applications were as follows: pests - check plots had 19, 18, 26 and 18 mounds per plot (= 1.1, 1.1, 1.6, 1.1 mounds per yd², respectively); turf - fairway - 30% Kentucky bluegrass, 40% Poa annua, 30% perennial ryegrass; height - 1.0 inches; thatch 0.0-0.25 inch, moist, loose; soil - moist, slight slope to west; 60°F at 1 inch, 58°F at 3 inches (soil sample yielded: pH =5.5; P-K-Ca-Mg = 200+, 201, 2913, 286 lb/acre available nutrient, respectively; cation exchange capacity = 11.9; organic matter = 6.3%; sand-silt-clay = 80%, 9%, 11%, respectively = sandy loam); weather - clear, gusty 5-10mph, from northeast; air temperature 63°F. Efficacy of the treatments was evaluted on 10, 27 May, 15 Jul, 2 Sep and 13 Oct ( 13, 30, 79, 128 and 169 DAT) by counting the number of active ant mounds in 2 yd² areas in each plot. ANOVA was performed on untransformed plot totals. Significantly different means were separated by LSD at α = 0.05. At 13 DAT, all treatments had significant reductions in ant mounds, untreated checks averaged 4.75 mounds per yd². But, Merit 0.5G, Mach-2, Fipronil and Dursban Pro treatments were not considered acceptable. Any treatment containing a pyrethroid (Scimitar or Talstar) produced 71% to 100% mound reduction. By 30 DAT, ant mounding was generally increasing in all plots, but the pyethroid treated plots were still suppressing ant mound formation. By 79 DAT, no significant differences between treatments and checks could be determined, though there appeared to be suppression of mounds in the plots treated with Merit 0.5G, Mach-2 and Fipronil. By the 128 and 169 DAT only the plots treated with Merit or Firponil had significant mound reductions. This is consitent with previous experiences with these products. At no time was there evidence of phytotoxicity from any of the treatments."
