| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses ways to avoid "quack" products at trade shows. Recommends asking for data that proves the effectiveness of a product, asking for genus and species data on biological treatments, and asking what the mode of action is for biological treatments. Cautions not to buy the product if the vendor cannot answer these questions. Discusses the rediscovery of the ineffective fungus trichoderma. States that "just because the product is natural it doesn't mean that it can't hurt you." Also mentions that many biologicals that are effective in lab settings are not effective under field conditions. Suggests reasons to be skeptical of consumer testimony and ways to interpret scientific data. Briefly mentions an 80-10-10 root zone mixture for topdressing greens, which appears to be "a very innovative way to increase microbial health of your root zone environment. The idea is so good, in fact, that I believe she/he should be giving a semeniar on it during the 'Innovative Superintendent' session next year in Las Vegas." |
