Abstract/Contents:Discusses the damage caused to turf by oversaturated, poorly drained soils. Also explains bioassays, a method of testing soil to determine identify chemical toxicity, a problem which can mimic the damage caused by poor drainage and cause confusion. Discusses means of dealing with both chemical toxicity and poor drainage. For toxicity, suggests removing soil in the affected area to 4 inches of depth. For drainage, suggests filling in depressions in the soil, recontouring the surface of the green so it slopes, installing tile drainage, or creating vertical drainage through drilling. Also explains that uneven settling "that creates depressions and surface compaction" is a common cause of poor soil drainage.
