Abstract/Contents:"Widespread pesticide use and its subsequent impact on the environment and insect resistance have lead to the development of more efficient ways of controlling pests. The turfgrass industry has made many improvements in the way turf pests are controlled. These methods include regular monitoring, alteration of cultural practices, and utilization of resistant plant material. No choice feeding experiments using excised leaf tissue of several zoysiagrass cultivars (Zoysia spp.) conducted on fall armyworms (Spodoptera frugiperda J. E. Smith Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) have revealed varying degrees of resistance in zoysiagrass cultivars. It is the objective of this research to determine what biochemical and forage quality factors contribute to fall armyworm resistance in six zoysiagrass cultivars and what effects nitrogen fertilization has on these factors. Preliminary analysis of data indicates that resistance of the cultivars evaluated is not likely due to secondary metabolite production of Luteolins. However, increased nitrogen fertilization did significantly reduce the production of Luteolin content. In addition, several forage quality parameters such as percentage lignin and percentage cell wall content were positively correlated with resistance."
