Abstract/Contents:Presents proposed modifications for the USGA sports turf construction recommendations. Topics discussed include selection of root zone sand, influence of the gravel raft on the moisture release properties of the root zone, position of the organic amendment, and the effect of the blinding or choker layer on the perched water table. Recommends the following steps for refining the USGA constuction methods: "1. Carrying out a full moisture release curve to determine the optimum root-zone depth. 2. Taking into account the tension of the gravel layer when determining the optimum root-zone depth. 3. Amending only the top 100-150mm of the root-zone as opposed to the entire root-zone depth. 4. Avoiding the use of a blinding sand by matching the gravel size to the particle size distribution of the root-zone."
