Abstract/Contents:"Compost from grass clippings used at a Manitoba golf course was found to have very low organic matter content, low moisture content and significant mercury concentrations. Elevated mercury levels may have been due to previous mercurial fungicide use. According to the authors, continued use of the compost at the golf course was not identified as a concern, since its mercury load is 150 times less than that from a single dose of the fungicide. Over the long term, mercury concentration in the complst should decline as the putting green soil is remediated. The following conclusions were made: A composting pad should be installed to isolate compost from the soil; Moisture content should be kept above 40 percent during curing; Aeration core material should not be returned to the greens; Long-term monitoring of mercury remediation should be implemented and continued until finished material is below guideline value; and A health risk assessment should be done concerning handling and processing of aeration cores and grass clippings."
