Abstract/Contents:"Influence of nitrogen source on development of gray leaf spot in perennial ryegrass fairways was investigated. Treatments included NH4NO3, (NH4)2SO4, urea, isobutylidene diurea (IBDU), and Milorganite (MG) at 0.5 lb and 1.0 lb per 1000 sq ft. Ten days after inoculation of turf with Pyricularia grisea, disease assessments were made at 7-day intervals for a 49-day period. There were significant effects (alpha=0.05) of N source and rate on disease severity (DS). DS for NH4NO3, (NH4)2SO4, or urea was significantly greater than that for IBDU, MG, and control. DS for IBDU did not differ from that of MG. DS for NH4NO3, (NH4)2SO4, urea, IBDU, and control decreased over time, and there were no significant differences among them during the final 21 days of assessment period. However, DS for MG was significantly lower than that for NH4NO3, (NH4)2SO4, urea, and control throughout the assessment period. Rate of turf recovery for NH4NO3, (NH4)2SO4, urea, and control was significantly lower than that for IBDU and MG. This study indicates that controlled-release N may be applied as part of the integrated gray leaf spot management strategy."
