| Abstract/Contents: | Describes how taxonomic works and how the abundance of turfgrass names has made it very difficult to recognize different turf species. Discusses the use of natural hybridization among different turf species including the combination of A. stolonifera and A. tenuis. Presents an experiment that compared "the growth characteristics of parental and hybrid plants from Port Meadow." Results include that the Agrostis stolonifera has disadvantages as a result of its lack of density and its failure to grow satisfactorily on poor soils", but now developers are able to develop turf vegetatively from rooted tiller materials that may be comprised of completely sterile plants. Concludes that "it [the hybridization] possesses exactly those characters [characteristics] which would adapt it better than its parents to growth [grow] in a heavily grazed or mown sward." |
