Abstract/Contents: | "Hybridization between two grass species followed by chromosome doubling and a return to fertility, has long been recognized as one of the key evolutionary processes in the grasses. Natural or chance hybrids between many species and genera have been reported by taxonomists for most of the important turf species but they have not been extensively utilized by breeders. Hybrids from controlled crosses have been utilized in forage grass improvement but there has been much less use in turfgrass breeding. Controlled hybridizations between two grass species may increase the genetic variability available to turfgrass breeders to select for unique cultivars. New technologies may make these hybridizations easier and make introgression of desirable traits easier to follow through marker-assisted selection." |
