Abstract/Contents:"Kentucky bluegras (Poa pratensis L.) is one of the most popular and widely prepagated turfgrasses. One of the main methods of developing new cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass is to extensively collect 'naturally' occurring strains in old turfs, cemeteries, pastures, and golf courses. Extensive and labor intensive morphological evaluations must be performed in order to distinguish newly collected strains from existing cultivars. The objective of the present study is to assess the RAPD marker technique for its ability to discriminate among cultivars of apomictic Kentucky bluegrasses and thereby enable breeders to more quickly and reliably compare newly collected ecotypes against a database of past and current cultivars. Most of the 93 entries (62%) examined with 15 RAPD markers were observed to be uniquely different from one another. Those entries that were observed to be non-unique represented groups of entries that require further detailed observation. The techniques described herein should be of benefit and practical value when attempting to differentiate newly collected material from commercial cultivars or other duplicate germplasms. The RAPD marker data bases generated from this study are available on request."
