Abstract/Contents:"Chemical insecticides remain the primary means for control of southern chinch bug Blissus insularis Barber (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae) in St. Augustinegrass, Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.). We report the results of field cage insecticide tests conducted 1993 - 1998 for control of this insect. Several treatments demonstrated practical levels of control. Adjusted % mortality rates of 90 or above were recorded for adult southern chinch bugs treated with bifenthrin 80F at 0.2247 kg[AI]/ha, fipronil 0.1 G at 0.0140 and 0.0281 kg[AI]/ha, cyfluthrin 125SC and cyfluthrin 40 WP at 0.112 kg[AI]/ha, cyfluthrin 20WP at 0.224 kg[AI]/ha, plus chlorpyrifos 4.38%SL at 1.12 kg[AI]/ha. Additional treatments with scores above 80 included chlorfenapyr 3SC at 0.28 and 0.84 kg[AI]/ha, bifenthrin 80F at 0.0562 and 0.1123 kg[AI]/ha, tefluthrin 1.5G at 1.1627 kg[AI]/ha, as well as cypermethrin 0.23G at 0.45 and 0.67 kg[AI]/ha. Other pesticides tested include formulations of acephate, cyromazine, deltamethrin, diazinon, fenoxycarb, lambda-cyhalothrin, and pymetrozine. We found no convincing signs of organophosphate insecticide resistance."
