Abstract/Contents:Discusses the benefits of organic and biological alternatives to supplement turf maintenance programs, explaining that "many of these products claim to provide many benefits including thatch reduction, pest and disease control, reduced fertiliser use, increased root growth, and stronger and tougher plants that have improved heat, drought and wear tolerance." Discusses the lack of trial data to back up the claims made about organic and biological products. Presents a trial which is "analysing several `organic' products and assessing their value in turf maintenance programs, by examining their effect on turf quality, thatch depth, root growth, root health, incidence of disease and nematode numbers. Details the procedures of the trials, which are taking place in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia, explaining that "establishing sites in two cities allows more products to be tested under two different climatic regimes with several products being common in both locations." Reports that "after one year of assessments there is very little evidence to suggest one program/treatment produces significantly greater turf quality, or disease resistance, compared with the control. However, no program/treatment produced turf that was a lower quality to the control." Details the results found on each test site. States that "the major difference observed in the first year of the trial is the cost of the treatments and the number of applications that must be made. The benefits of using these products would need to be significant in order to justify their cost and the added expense in applying some of the treatments." Also presents a new product from biological turf management, which is "a soil system designed to produce healthy, stress-free grass." Explains the characteristics and benefits of the soil system.
