Abstract/Contents: | "This study was conducted on a mature stand of "Midnight" Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) at the Landscape Management Research Center, Penn State University, University Park, Pa. The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of herbicides for the preemergence control of smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum). This study was a randomized complete block design with three replications. All of the treatments were applied on April 19, 2000 using a three foot CO2 powered boom sprayer calibrated to deliver 80 gpa using two, flat fan, 6504 nozzles at 40 psi. Some treatments were reapplied eight weeks later on June 16, 2000. Granular treatments were applied with a shaker jar. After application the entire test site received approximately 0.5 lb N/M from a 24-4-12 SCU fertilizer to treatments that did not contain any nitrogen fertilizer as a carrier. Crabgrass germination was first noted in the test site on May 5, 2000. The following herbicides provided preemergence crabgrass control near or above the 85% level considered to be commercially acceptable: Pendulum (pendimethalin) 2G at 2 lbs ai/A, all rates of Barricade (prodiamine) 4FL and 65WDG, Betasan (bensulide) at 9.2 oz/M and 5.5 oz/M followed by 3.65 oz/M eight weeks later, Ronstar (oxadiazon) 2G (fine) at 2 lbs ai/A, Dimension (dithiopyr) 1EC at 0.25 lbs ai/A, Dimension 40 WP at 0.25 lbs ai/A, Dimension 2.65MEC (PE1XF00045) at 0.18 and 0.25 lbs ai/A, Dimension (AND442) 0.035G at 0.18 lbs ai/A." |
