Abstract/Contents:Seven highly regarded cool season grasses were tested for germination and growth under poor soil temperature conditions over a six month period. The seven grasses consisted of six perennial ryegrass cultivars, Loretta, Barry, Belle, Delray, Citation, and Yorktown II, and Sabre rough bluegrass. Overseeding was done on a dormant Tifgreen bermudagrass green (pH 8.0) at a Texas A&M field laboratory. Verticutting was done 10 days prior to seeding. The ryegrasses and Sabre rough bluegrass were seeded with a drop spreader at 35 lbs per M and 10 lbs per M, respectively. Topdressing with sand at 1/8 inch followed. After 8 days, mowing was initiated at 5/16 inch; 3 weeks after seeding, it was lowered to 1/4 inch. Irrigation was done as needed. Monthly nitrogen applications at 1 lb per M were made. Sabre rough bluegrass and Loretta perennial ryegrass showed a better capability for germination and growth under suboptimal soil temperatures. Barry, Belle, Delray, Citation, and Yorktown II, repsectively, were less successful under these conditions. A table compares the winter turfgrass quality in December, January, and February for the seven overseeded turfgrasses.
