| Abstract/Contents: | Seven St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum) cultivars were established at the Texas A&M Field Laboratory. They were: Floratam, Floratine, Raleigh, Seville, Scotts's 1081, Texas Common, and Bitter Blue. Seville, Floratam, and Texas Common ranked highest in overall turfgrass quality, followed by Raleigh, Bitter Blue, Scott's 1081, and Floratine ranking the lowest. Scott's 1081, Raleigh, Bitter Blue, Seville, and Texas Common all had similar shoot density. Both Floratam and Floratine ranked much lower. Floratam had the most rapid vertical leaf extension rate, while Seville had the slowest. Seville had the narrowest leaf width, while the Florida types, such as Bitter Blue, Floratam, and Floratine exhibited a coarse leaf texture. Scott's 1081 possessed the shortest internode length, with Raleigh having the longest. The remainder of the cultivars ranked intermediate. Texas Common and Scott's 1081 had the smallest internode diameter, with Bitter Blue and Floratam having much thicker stolons. These results represent 3 years of a 6 year study, therefore, 3 more years of observations are needed to make final conclusions on these cultivars. Tables summarize comparative seasonal turfgrass quality and characteristics. |
