Abstract/Contents:"Tall fescue leaf blades elongate at near steady rates during the light and dark periods with the dark rate being 65% higher. Data were taken on the spatial and temporal distribution of growth velocities and of water and water soluble carbohydrate (WSC) densities in the elongation zone of the blade. Rates of deposition were estimated using the continuity equation. The 65% higher leaf elongation in darkness was due to proportionally increased elongation rates of all segments within the elongation zone, with overall length of the zone remaining at 30 mm. Segmental elongation rates were linearly related to rates of water deposition into segments. Maximum sucrose deposition occurred in the basal, younger half of the elongation zone. Deposition of fructans, mostly DP=3, 4, and 5, was greatest in the central zone where elongation was most active comprising up to 21 bars of the osmotic potential. Dark rates of WSC deposition were negative at and above the apical end of the elongation zone, suggesting more carbohydrate use than import in this zone during the dark."
