Abstract/Contents:Discusses the damage on Southern Alberta golf courses caused by Chinook winds, which are "strong, desiccating westerly winds featuring an erratic and rapid thaw-and-freeze cycle." Explains that "the quick melt turns snow cover to water very quickly, so quickly that water doesn't always have a chance to drain completely before freezing temperatures return." Discusses the challenges involved in keeping turf healthy amidst Chinooks. Discusses the problems Cottonwood Golf and Country Club, south of Calgary faces ever year, explaining that "in addition to dealing with the runoff from Chinook melts, Cottonwood has had to deal with flooding from the Bow river." Discusses the effects of summer droughts on turf, city parks and athletic fields. Describes the cultural practices the city of Calgary has implemented to improve plant health. Explains that the practices have "also increased fall fertilization to choke out weeds and, hopefully, use fewer pesticides."
