Abstract/Contents:"Experimental and commercially available herbicides were evaluated at two locations in three separate tests in 1985 for preemergence control of smooth crabgrass [Digitaria ischaemem (Schreb.) Muhl]. The soil at both locations was a silty loam. At Silver Spring, soil pH was 5.2 and organic matter was 2.4%; at college Park, pH was 5.7 and organic matter was 3.8%. The turf at both locations was predominately perennial ryegrass. Sprayable herbicides listed in Table 1 were applied in 457 L ha-1 with a CO2 pressurized sprayer, and granular herbicides were applied with a shaker bottle. The benefin + trifluralin treatments appearing in Table 2 were applied in 660 L ha-1; whereas, SN 594 was applied in 467 L ha-1. Herbicides were applied on the dates noted in Tables 1 and 2. Herbicide treated plots in Silver Spring were irrigated (2.0 to 3.0 cm) within 24 hrs of application. In College Park (no irrigation) trace amounts of rainfall occurred 6 out of 7 days following application, but 1.5 cm rain fell within 24 hrs of the sequentilal application of herbicides. Plots measured 1.5 by 1.5m, and were arranged in a randomized complete block with four replications at all three sites. Crabgrass seedlings were not observed until 28 April at Silver Spring and 5 May, 1985 in College Park. Crabgrass cover was determined 4 September, 1985. The College Park site had a moderate to high level (37%) of crabgrass; however, at Silver Spring the infestation was exceptionally high (97%). Treatments providing an acceptable level (i.e.>90%) in College Park were all pendimethalin treatments involving a sequential application and DCPA (11.8 + 5.9 kg ha-1). Fair to good control (>78%), and a statisticallly similar level of control to the aforementioned treatments, was provided by all other herbicides, except SN 594. In Silver Spring, where crabgrass invasion was severe, only the high rate of pendimethalin (3.4 + 1.7 kg-1) provided an acceptable level of control. Fair to good control was provided by DCPA (72%), and pendimethalin at 1.7 + 1.7 (78%) or 2.2 + 1.7 kg ha-1 (85%). Various ratios, rates and formulations of benefin plus trifluralin, and SN 594 were evaluated in a separate study conducted in Silver Spring (Table 2). Although all herbicide treatments significantly reduced crabgrass level, none provided an acceptable level of control. Of all the treatments evaluated, benefin + trifluralin (1:1) 28.6 DP at 3.4 kg ha-1 was most effective (86%) in controlling smooth crabgrass."
