Abstract/Contents:"The objective of the tall fescue breeding program is the selection of genetic populations of Festuca sp. with increased disease and insect resistance, tolerance to environmental stress, aesthetic value and agronomic characteristics. Varieties of otehr cool-season species will be evaluated under various managements to improve performance and aesthetic value. Lolium-Festuca hybrid derivatives were screened in spaced plant nurseries for drought tolerance and fine texture. Polycross progenies of superior nursery selections were compared to commercially available tall fescue 'turf-type' varieties under turf-type managements. Generally, polycross progenies were equal to but not statistically superior to the best commercially through 1985. fescue turf-type varieties. The new Johnstone tall fescue variety was compared in a non-replicated test to Rebel and Houndog turf-type varieties during 1983 through 1985. Johnstone compared favorably to Rebel and Houndog for turf density, was consistently superior in color during cold and heat stress periods, and was superior in resistance to the red thread (Laetisaria fuciformis) disease."
