Abstract/Contents:Discusses a drought that occurred across the United States in 2002. States that the 2002 "summer was the warmest since the 1930s, and 29 states had 'significantly below-average precipitation' according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association's Climate Prediction Center." Explains that "as of late October, the main area of drought covers most of the western United States from California and Oregon eastward to Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico, with drought also covering the western High Plains." Describes how the drought is expected to ease over the winter in many of these areas, but "there is a likelihood for drought to persist and possibly expand across the Northwest, especially from Idaho to Montana and south to Wyoming [and] drought may also persist in parts of the Midwest, mainly in the Indiand and Ohio area." Explains the process of forming long-term drought forecasts, and how recent research has finally made the connection between El Niño and La Niña conditions and persistent droughts.
