Abstract/Contents:"Bermudagrass decline is one of the most serious problems facing golf superintendents in the state. We have learned much about the disease during the past 2 1/2 years that we have worked on the problem. We have defined its symptoms and estalished factors affecting its occurrence. We have not yet established a definite causal agent, although we suspect the brown fungus associated with the decining root system is at least partially involved. This fungus is probably a species of either Gaeumannomyces (Ophiobolus) or Leptosphaeria. Fungi in both of these general attack grasses including bermudagrass and they are difficult to control with chemicals. To date, no chemical control is known for bermudagrass decline. Cultural practices, especially aerification, followed by topdressing will help retard the disorder. In some cases the use of a non-ionic wetting agent will also help. Temporarily raising mowing height is also of benefit.
