Abstract/Contents:Describes the classification of ants into three groups, explaining that "group one is composed of ants with one node (the node is the projection on the pedicel separating the throax from the `gaster,' or abdomen) and a tuft of hair at the tip of the gaster. Group two is composed of ants with one node and without a tuft of hairs at the tip of the gaster. Group three is composed of ants with two nodes (called the petiole and postpetiole)." Explains how to tell species of ants apart, within each of the three groups. Advises "keep in mind that many other species of ants can occasionally turn up in a structure...if your ants do not fit into the descriptions above, you need to get them identified by an entomologist." Also includes facts on red imported fire ants, such as reproduction and diet habits.
