| Abstract/Contents: | "Land reclamation sites pose severe nutritional, toxicity and physical problems for plant growth. Colliery spoil is a typical example, being virtually devoid of nitrogen and phosphorus and often extremely acidic. It has no soil structure and consolidates to an extremely dense, hard and impermeable material. Treatments have been devised to correct the nutritional, acidity and toxicity problems so that grassland can be established directly on industrial wasteland. The physical problems, however, particularly consolidation, are intractable and it has to be accepted that most reclaimed land has serious limitations for intensive uses. Grassland planted directly on colliery spoil often suffers from periodic waterlogging, droughting and many of the problems such as poor aeration which restrict turf growth. For sports turf construction, it is recommended that deep layers of primary and secondary cover materials be placed to isolate the adverse structural problems of wasteland. Drainage is of crucial importance because of the impermeability of the underlying material." |
