Abstract/Contents:Discusses how to manage geese on the golf course using habitat modification. States that "by establishing native vegetation in appropriate locations within the course, superintendents can affect the movement and foraging of geese." Explains that "three habitat modification techniques can be incorporated into the golf course setting. First, plant a continuous vegetative border of sufficient height (approximately 30 inches) along open water areas...The second modification requires converting mown, out-of-play areas to native prairie grass and wildflower mixes, thus eliminating potential goose foraging areas...The final modification is a variation on the second. It attempts to move geese to preferred grazing areas on the course by maintaining an area of mowed grass in non-adjacent out-of-play areas." Concludes that "by taking steps to understand geese habits and by restoring native vegetation to affect these habits, effective goose control can be achieved in a low-maintenance and environmentally sound approach."
