Approx. 923,000 acres of turfgrass is grown in Florida. Statewide it is estimated that 30% has been damaged by mole crickets. Two species are prevalent, the tawny (Scapteriscus vicinus Scudder) and the southern mole cricket (Scapteriscus acletus Rehn and Hebard). The short-winged (Scapteriscus abbriviatus Scudder) and the northern (Gryllotalpa hexadactyla Perty) are also present in Florida, but in small numbers."
