| Abstract/Contents: | "Nitrogen fixing shrubs and trees are attracting more and more attention for their use in low maintenance landscape. Growth effects of Lupinus albifrons in association with tall fescue turf were studied. Both greenhouse and field experiments showed that the growth of lupine plants associated with turf was reduced regardless of high or low nitrogen application. In spite of the growth reduction, the lupine plants appeared very healthy and had no apparent allelopathic effect, but the flowering of the plants was delayed even inhibited. Tal fescue turf associated with lupine under low nitrogen fertilization showed greater chlorophyll content and yielded slightly greater clipping dry weight than the turf grown alone under greenhouse conditions. Acetylene reduction rates of root nodules and nodulation on plant dry weight basis were not affected by the association with tall fescue." |
