Abstract/Contents:"Developmental work has been performed within the Stockholm Parks Department, partly on its own and partly in cooperation with Weibullsholm Turf Grass Section. As can be seen from the tables big steps forward were made from 1938 to 1946. In 1958 less than a quarter of the area had to be resown annually compared to 20 years earlier. This development is due to an increasing use of varieties and species better adapted to turf purposes. The number of mixtures has been reduced. From 1968 there are only four mixtures (A-D in the text). This fact made the seed purchase much easier. In 1970 Stockholm had 4200 hectares green areas. Most of that is woodland. However 1300 hectares is cut at least twice per annum. One cut costs about 500000:-Sw. Cr. (0,042 Sw.Cr/m2). On an average there are 6 cuts, which means about 0,25 Sw.Cr./m2/season. Growth retarding substances (e. g. MH30) have also been tested. Unfortunately they did not prove very useful. It is very important to keep the grass at a good standard without too intensive growth by controlling the fertility level. The variety trial performed by Weibullsholm Turf Grass Section gives us good a hope about still better varieties. It is obvious that the price of these specially grown turf grass seed with special characteristics will be higher than common seed. The seed cost is to-day 0,15-0,20 Sw.Cr./m2. One cut costs about 0,042 Sw.Cr. and 6 cuts in one season about 0,25 Sw.Cr. These figures show clearly that the limited growth of the better grass varieties could well justify a higher seed price."
