Abstract/Contents: | Soil conditions for maintenance of quality turfgrass and selection of golf course sites are discussed regarding salinity in accordance with fertility. There are three types of salt affected soils: Saline, saline-alkali, and nonsaline-alkali. Saline-alkali soils usually exist when sodium takes up more than half the total soluble cations and the pH remains below 8.5. Saline contains enough soluble salt to injure plant growth and pH is below 8.4. Nonsaline-alkali soils don't contain soluble salts, but exchangeable sodium that interferes with growth of group plants. Salts develop in the soil in three ways -already there, high ground water table, or added from irrigation - which is the most frequent cause. Leaching and drainage are essential in the control of salinity. Alkaline soils have a Ph of 7.5 to 8.4 and nutrients become limited due to lower solubility. High pH 8.5 to 10.0 can be harmful because of toxic elements. Water quality, salinity tests, and drainage systems analysis are pertinent to turf maintenance to avoid turf problems. |
