Abstract/Contents: | A winter overseeding study was conducted on a Cynodon golf green. The plot was severely mowed vertically in the fall due to vegetation build up. One lb / ft2 of nitrogen was applied and latter fungicide captan was applied. The area was seeded with cultivars of several species including Lolium perenne, Poa pratensis, Poa trivalis, Agrostis, and Festuca rubra subsp. commutate at different rates. Then top dressing, irrigating, and eventually mowing took place. Cultural practices of mowing, removing clippings, fertilizing, watering, and visually rating the area were conducted regularly. Results indicate Lolium perenne cultivar 'Manhattan' was outstanding, even when a period of decline due to high pH and salt levels occurred. Also 'Dawson' Festuca rubra and 'Sabre' Poa trivalis ranked superior. Spring transition was difficult for Poa due to disease attack. This is a four year study. Tables summarize biweekly winter performance rating establishment rate, and spring transition (visual quality and leaf density count) for a) 20 perennial ryegrass cultivars, b) 10 non-ryegrass cultivars and c) 11 polystands for winter overseeding. |
